What is Low/High Porosity?

When I first started my natural hair journey, I was using products that had ingredients that were harmful for my hair. I didn’t understand why my hair was still not improving or would feel stripped constantly. I was using products that have sulfates/parabens. These chemicals are responsible for making your shampoo foam up and are meant to cleanse your hair but in turn can also strip away the natural oils from your scalp and make your hair dry and brittle. You have to experiment with products to know what your hair type can handle because some hair can tolerate sulfates/parabens, so it isn’t always a bad thing. To be able to figure out which products to use, you first need to figure out what your hair porosity is.

Hair Porosity is your hair’s ability to absorb and hold moisture. You can follow this link from one of my favorite curly hair pages to know more: xhttps://www.naturallycurly.com/texture-typing/hair-porosity

Low Porosity hair usually rejects water or won’t let it penetrate as well so in turn you have to make sure that you choose products that will hydrate your hair well. I have low porosity so when shopping for products I choose the ones that are sulfate free so that my hair won’t be more dry than it usually is. My hair is also prone to product build up since the products sit on top of the hair instead of penetrating it. A good clarifying shampoo is key. I have been using Carol’s Daughter Wash Day Delight and it leaves my scalp squeaky clean. Since low porosity hair usually doesn’t allow product penetration, I cocktail my products or layer them so that it is well moisturized. I apply leave-in conditioner and gel usually on damp hair and depending on the product might even add a cream. Be mindful of the way that you apply products onto your hair as some products like thick creams can also weigh your hair down if your hair is fine. Also, deep conditioning is key! I will share some of my favorite deep conditioners in the next post. Try out the float test below for yourself and let me know which porosity you are!
